Food Review #2 Whole Foods Market 365 Brand Orange Creme Soda

Whole Foods Market 365 Brand Orange Creme Soda is very good. With notes of orange and rich creme it is sure delicious. It tastes better than a orange float. It makes you feel like you've taken back in time to an old soda bar. It pairs well with vanilla ice cream, sugar cookies, and much more! It is also all natural and sweetened with sugar!(no H.C.F.S!) But it comes in cans, not bottles and the lining of cans can contain BPA, although I am not sure if 365 brand's does. Overall Whole Foods Market 365 Brand Orange Creme Soda gets a 9 because of the great old fashioned flavor, the fact that its all natural and sweetened with sugar, but it only comes in cans, which isn't bad but I just prefer bottles as my personal preference.

Food Review #1 Sierra Mist Natural

Sierra Mist Natural is made by PepsiCo(also known as Pepsi and Pepsi-Cola). It used to be sweetened with H.C.F.S, also know as High Fructose Corn Syrup but now all the ingredients in the non-diet Sierra Mists sodas are all natural, and it's sweetened with sugar. It comes in many flavors such as Lemon-Lime, Diet Lemon-Lime, Diet Ruby Splash, Diet Cranberry Splash, and Cranberry Splash. This review is on the regular(non-diet) varieties, which are Lemon-Lime, and Cranberry Splash.
Cranberry Splash

The Cranberry Splash is a very delicious soda. Although it is only available during the holiday season. It pairs well with turkey, chicken, pork, and other meats. It also pairs well with most holiday food. It is a festive drink, like Egg Nog, but in a soda for with cranberry flavor. The soda mainly has a cranberry flavors with hints of citrus, with a light body. It has a nice aftertaste and may also be used as a palate cleanser after turkey, chicken, or pork. And the soda has a very natural taste, and no film or syrupy stuff develops after you drink it because it is sweetened with sugar! Overall Sierra Mist Natural Cranberry Splash is a great soda and gets a 10 because of its great taste, versatility, and all natural ingredients.
Lemon-Lime

The Lemon-Lime Sierra Mist is also very versatile. It pairs well with many different foods such as, citrus dishes, chicken, beef, some types of pork, and much much more food. It also serves as a great palate cleanser. The flavor of this flavor of Sierra Mist is more subtle than the Cranberry Splash flavor. It also is very good for warm weather, but is good for any season. And it is also sweetened with sugar! This soda has a subtle flavor with lemon and lime the most recognizable, while it also has hints of other flavors as well. Over all Sierra Mist Natural Lemon-Lime gets a 10 just like it's Cranberry Splash counterpart.

Portlandia

The other night I saw a very good show called Portlandia, which is about Portland, Oregon. It is a comedy show on IFC and stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. It was very funny especially this part, which involves an organic chicken. The show is very good and I highly recommend.

Appliance Review #1: SodaStream Genesis and Sodastream Soda Mixes

This is first review of anything ever on this blog! This review is on the Sodastream Genesis and mixes. Americans and other people around the world LOVE soda! But many sodas contain High Fructose Corn Syrup, also know as H.F.C.S, which comes from cornstarch and therefore is modified in a lab and has things added to it. A lot of corn for the H.F.C.S is G.M.O, which stands for, Geneticly Modified Organism, which is food that is modified in a lab basically. The reason why companies use H.F.C.S is because it is much than sugar. H.F.C.S is also proven to be bad for your health. So back to the Sodastream Genesis and mixes here is the review of both.

Sodastream Genesis

The Good:
  • Easy to use ( I have a fractured arm and I can even use it).
  • Easy to put together (it only has a few parts which are, the bottom, the top, the carbonator, and the bottle.)
  • It can make water to your desired fizziness.
  • It is light.
  • You do not have to lug a lot of bottles around.
  • It does not use any electricity and can be used virtually anywhere.
  • It is more green than buying soda and reduces your carbon footprint.
  • It is small and ideal for small spaces.
  • It is fun to make soda.
The Bad:
  • It can fall of the counter easily.
  • It is $99.99 and looks like $20.
  • It's clunky.
  • I do not like the bottles because they are made out of plastic and are not dishwasher-safe.
  • The bottles may not screw on all the way.
  • Plastic bottles are not as green as glass bottles.
Sodastream Soda Mixes

The Good
  • NOTHING!

The Bad
  • The mixes are mainly sweetened with Splenda, which is artificial!
  • They have Sodium Citrate which can cause Diarrhea, loose stools, nausea, upset stomach, and vomiting( the mixes made me sick for a few days!)
  • They taste terrible.
  • You can taste that Splenda, diet soda taste.
  • Soda tastes very watered down.
  • Has artificial colors in it.
  • Has artificial flavors in it.
  • It is not all natural or organic.
  • Everything else!
The Verdict:
Overall the Sodastream Genesis soda maker isn't that bad, you should be careful with it. Although I do not like the plastic bottles, there are other models that have glass bottle such as the Penguin, which I haven't tried yet. The Genesis is a little overpriced but it is nice to make your own sodas. For the Sodastream Genesis I am giving it a score of 6 because of the plastic bottles, the clunky design, and the price. And as for the Sodastream Soda Syrups/Mixes, the get a score of 0 because there is nothing good about them! Barely anything is natural, they make you sick (literally), taste terrible, and are mainly sweetened with Splenda! These mixes get a big fat 0 because they are bad. Do not buy the Sodastream Soda Mixes instead make your own or get some from William-Sonoma Soda Syrups or Pittsburgh Soda Pop or other companies. Or you can just buy all-natural, or organic soda, or whatever kind you like just try to stay away from H.F.C.S!

Scoring On Reviews!

The scoring system on the reviews will be numbers from 0-10 here is what they mean

  • 0- As bad as can be.
  • 1-Really Bad.
  • 2-Pretty Bad.
  • 3- Bad.
  • 4-Not great.
  • 5-Almost decent.
  • 6-Ok.
  • 7-Good.
  • 8-Great.
  • 9-Awesome.
  • 10-Extremely awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Food Of The Week: Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is a great product. You can use it for many things and its all natural too. Some of the things its good for are, putting on pancakes, waffles, crumpets, french toast, and oatmeal, for making breads, cakes, muffins, donuts, buns, and many other things. Maple syrup is a all natural sweetener and is a great alternative to other sweeteners. Maple syrup production is mainly in north-eastern North America, such as Vermont, and Quebec. Maple syrup comes from the sap of the sugar maple, red maple , or black maple trees. In colder climates the maple trees store starch inside the tree during the winter, and turns into sap in the spring. Quebec, Canada produces most of the world's maple syrup supply. Maple syrup is also made in other countries and continents such as, Japan and South Korea. Also it is traditional in South Korea to eat maple sap which they call "gorosoe" instead of making it into syrup.

Organic maple syrup is even better than all natural maple syrup because it was made with no pesticides or anything unnatural. There are many products made from maple syrup such as, maple cream, maple sugar, and maple candy. There is also a diet/detox called The Master Cleanser Detox Diet, which was created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941, which is still very popular to this day. Which involves mixing Organic Grade B Maple Syrup, fresh lemon juice, and cayenne pepper, and then drinking it. I personally would not do it because I think that the combination just sounds absolutely disgusting; but thats just me it works for some people and for some it does not. Overall maple syrup is a very useful food, is very versitale, and tastes delicious too! Here are some links to websites featuring and about maple syrup.

Food Of The Season: Gingerbread!

                       A Lebkuchen gingerbread house
History
Gingerbread was brought to Europe in 992 by the Armenian monk Gregory of Nicopolis (Gregory Makar) (Grégoire de Nicopolis). He left Nicopolis Pompeii, to live in Bondaroy (France), near the town of Pithiviers. He stayed there 7 years, and taught the Gingerbread cooking to French priests and Christians. He died in 999.[1][2][3]
During the 13th century, it was brought to Sweden by German immigrants. Early references from the Vadstena monastery show how the Swedish nuns were baking gingerbread to ease indigestion in the year 1444.[4] It was the custom to bake white biscuits and paint them as window decorations. The first documented trade of gingerbread biscuits dates to the 16th century, where they were sold in monasteries, pharmacies and town square farmers' markets. One hundred years later the town of Market Drayton in Shropshire, UK became known for its gingerbread, as is proudly decreed on their town's welcome sign. The first recorded mention of gingerbread being baked in the town dates back to 1793; however, it was probably made earlier, as ginger was stocked in high street businesses from the 1640s. Gingerbread became widely available in the 18th century.

 Varieties

A gingerbread house
Akin to the original middle eastern recipes, English gingerbread is a dense, treacly (molasses-based) spice cake or bread. Some recipes add mustard, pepper, raisins, nuts, apple, and/or other spices/ingredients to the batter. The usual way of making it is to melt the fat and then mix all the ingredients in a bowl (called "the gingerbread method") rather than using rubbing in or creaming to get the fat absorbed into the flour, and this makes it a particularly easy kind of cake to make. It is usually baked in a loaf or square shape, rather than in the round form common for fruit cakes or sponges. It is traditionally eaten on Bonfire Night. As a dessert, the bread usually omits raisins or nuts and is often served with warm lemon sauce. In the United States, this form of gingerbread is sometimes called "gingerbread cake" to distinguish it from the harder forms; as in England it is typically served in winter, but it is particularly associated with Christmas. French pain d'épices is somewhat similar, though generally slightly drier, and always involves honey rather than treacle (and originally its recipe did not involve ginger).
Parkin is a form of hard gingerbread made with oatmeal and treacle which is popular in the North of England.
In Germany gingerbread is made in two forms: a soft form called Lebkuchen and a harder form, particularly associated with carnivals and street markets such as the Christmas markets that occur in many German towns. The hard gingerbread is made in decorative shapes, which are then further decorated with sweets and icing. The tradition of cutting gingerbread into shapes takes many other forms, and exists in many countries, a well known example being the gingerbread man. Traditionally, these were dunked in port wine.
In parts of Scandinavia, the most popular form of ginger confection are the pepperkaker (Norwegian), pepparkakor (Swedish) or brunkager (Danish). They are thin, very brittle biscuits that are particularly associated with the extended Christmas period. In Norway and Sweden, pepperkaker/pepparkakor are also used as window decorations, the pepperkaker/pepparkakor are then a little thicker than usual and decorated with glaze and candy. Many families bake pepperkaker/pepparkakor/brunkager as a tradition with their kids. In English, pepperkaker/pepparkakor/brunkager would be referred to as ginger biscuits rather than gingerbread.
Gingerbreads are known in Russia. The most famous gingerbreads there are baked in the ancient cities Tula (Tula gingerbread), Vyazma, and Gorodets.
In Poland, the gingerbreads are knows as Pierniki. The most famous one is known as Toruń gingerbread (Toruński Piernik). Toruński Piernik is a traditional Polish gingerbread that has been produced since the Middle Ages in the city of Toruń (Thorn).
In Croatia, gingerbread known as licitar is traditionally made in the shape of a heart and is used as an ornamental gift

Gingerbread houses and decorations

The harder German-style Gingerbread is often used to build gingerbread houses similar to the "witch's house" encountered by Hansel and Gretel. These houses, covered with a variety of candies and icing, are popular Christmas decorations,[5] often built by chilcity"), it is claimed to be the world's largest such city. It's free for every child under the age of 12 to make their own house with the help of their parents. In 2009, the city was completely destroyed in an act of vandalism, devastating Bergen.[6][7]molded like clay to form inedible statuettes or other decorations. Gingerbread is avery delicious food. And a very festive food also for the winter season. It can also be a decorative food as in the form of a gingerbread house.

The First Food Of The Week Ever Is......Acai Berry!

Acai berries are a very(or berry) good fruit. The acai berry(pronounced ah-sigh-ee) originates from the country of Brazil. It grows on palm trees and the palm trees are also prized for their hearts of palm; which are supposed to be very delicious and among the best hearts of palm in the world. But acai berries are very very(or very berry) nutritious. Acai comes from the Brazilian adaption of a Tupian word meaning fruit that cries. In one part of Brazil acai berries are served in gourds with tapioca. But are usually  consumed in a bowl. It is also called the beauty berry. This little berry is packed full of so many antioxidants.  Its very good for your immune system too. And it takes years off your age! It doesn't taste that bad, it has a berry and chocolate flavor. I recommend Sambazon brand acai products; because their organic, and fair trade. Americans haven't had access to acai for that long; most did not even know about it or even what it was. But in the 1990's acai was finally brought to America. But it became as famous as it is very recently, only a few years ago. Dr. Memmet Oz is the one to thank for its sudden popularity in America; he talked about it and its great health effects on the Oprah show. In America they pasteurize acai juice to be safe. But in other countries such as the UK do not pasteurize acai juice. Some experts say that pasteurizing acai juice decreases alot of the nutritional value. I personally think that its good that they pasteurize it in order to get harmful bacteria out. There is also is freeze-dried acai powder, which is acai pulp which is freeze-dried and then diluted with corn starch and similar starches. Some expets say that there is alot more cornstarch in freeze-dried acai powder than acai . Possibly even 10 times the amount of cornstarch that pure acai powder: and that is not even including the other ingredients in the freeze-dried acai powder. Overall I do not recomend most freeze-dried acai powder because it is usually mainly cornstarch with purple food coloring. Also sometimes you cannot even taste the real acai. There is also frozen acai pulp, also known as acai smoothies, which is not bad. But it does stain your clothes,so be careful. It tastes pretty good, and alot of kids like it too! Here is a recipe for a traditional Brazilian acai bowl, this is also a vegan recipe.

                                             Acai Bowl*
2 packs Sambazon Original Açaí Juice
1 banana*(organic if possible)

Splash of apple juice* or soy milk*
Top with sliced bananas* and granola*

1.Add Original Açaí Juice, apple juice* or soy milk*, and half of the banana* into the blender.

2.Blend on high. Add more apple juice* or soy milk* if necessary, but keep it thick.

3.Put it in a bowl and garnish with granola* and other half of the banana*

* = Organic if possible.

Also here are links to several companies that sell acai(you can also buy acai seeds and plants but that's another article)
